Sometimes good things happen....well just recently, they certainly did for Tahi Bar. A couple of local musicians and Tahi regulars approached Silke and I to give the front courtyard a makeover. After seeing the drawings and hearing their plans we nervously agreed, when I say nervously, Tahi has been our lives for nearly 8 years and is all consuming alot of the time so we are ...just lets say a little attached, we also felt pangs of excitement at the new changes. Over a period of a couple of months these guys and others they brought on board, toiled endlessly to produce furniture and fittings that are truely remarkable. For five days in mid December we closed the bar and set about redefining the Tahi Bar image from tired and worn to vibrant, unique and oozing with style. Alot of people turned up to lend a hand (and an opinion) , sanding , painting , drilling, screwing, glueing, gardening, and even baking for the troops. It was, I must say here, it was one of the most humbling experiences I have encountered. People helping out because they wanted to be a part of a bar/community just because they enjoy being there. Yep we had a few beers after each days graft (thanks Tuatara for the cases of Iti), we developed new ideas and I personally enjoyed having such talented people around.
Now the new look is finished (maybe a little bit more.....?) and is outstanding. There is to my knowledge nothing quite like it . The majority of what was used was scrap and second hand that we re-purposed and gave another life.... actually abit like the gift that the guys who designed this have done for Tahi Bar.
It was launched on December 19th with a Steampunk Xmas party. Doghouse and Grub Street provided an appropriate soundtrack and the people came in great Steampunk costume. A cracking night.
So all that remains to be said is "Thank you linesman, thank you ballboys and the ladies for the spread"
Thank you Gareth and Deano for an amazing gift of talent and energy and the most amazing furniture and art ever.
We believe in Christmas again.
So please come on down and see what we have done. Tahi Bar, with a nod to past and an eye on the future.
Thank You and Merry Christmas and a safe New Year everyone.
